Description
Join us on St. Bridget’s Day on Saturday 1st February for a guided hike into the southern slopes of the famed Galty mountains. The outward journey passes a large lime kiln. Lime kilns were once common features of rural landscapes, now, unfortunately, most have been destroyed or have faded into the landscape. The route then takes in a Slate House with a notorious past. From here there is glorious views of the entire Galty Vee Valley between the Galty and Knockmealdown mountains.
The return journey brings us through Boolakennedy Wood, then passes Rehill Barracks and the imposing Burncourt Castle, before returning to Burncourt Community Hall for well earned refreshments.
Book now for another eagerly awaited walking experience with the Rhododendron Walking Festival crew.
Check in at Burncourt Community Hall 10am-10.30am. Transport will be arranged to bring walkers to walk start point. The terrain is forest paths, stony paths and open mountain with a gradual climb to the the Slate House requiring moderate fitness. The final section past Burncourt Castle is on road back to the community hall. The walk is 12km with 262metres ascent. Duration of walk is 3-3.5hours.
Walking boots essential with good grip and ankle support.
